About Us

Lyfe Languages is on a mission to create a universal medical translator. The project is committed to empowering and retaining Indigenous languages to address inequitable health outcomes within Indigenous communities. Connecting Languages plays a crucial role in improving health outcomes. In Western Australia, Indigenous men's life expectancy is 15.1 years lower than non-Aboriginals, and for women, it is 13.5 years lower, with about 80% of the mortality gap due to avoidable chronic diseases. The preservation of Indigenous languages can positively impact social outcomes and bridge the communication gap between health professionals and Indigenous Australians, avoiding the potential for negative health impacts.

The Lyfe Languages Initiative

Lyfe Languages program will connect youth and culture and support knowledge sharing between generations. The program began with a focus on improving the diagnosis and care of children with rare diseases and is now expanding to cover various common disorders. By translating complex medical terminologies into Indigenous languages, Lyfe Languages transforms culturally appropriate healthcare and connects ancient knowledge with new technologies.

Empowering Youth as Language Champions

The Lyfe Languages Champions program recruits young participants to translate medical terminology into local Indigenous languages. By empowering youth as language champions, the initiative bridges generations, brings families and communities together, and raises awareness about healthcare, language, and culture. Additionally, it develops culturally-appropriate healthcare resources and offers language-ready courses for Indigenous health professionals to effectively communicate complex medical terms and concepts.
